Tamil Nadu provides the option of praying in Tamil at 47 temples across the state.
A refresher
training on how to conduct Tamil prayers has been provided to temple priests.
Devotees in 47 Tamil Nadu temples will be able to pray in Tamil starting tomorrow,
thanks to the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) government of Chief Minister MK
Stalin, which instituted "Annai Thamizhil Archanai," which means "prayers in mother
tongue Tamil." Temple priests were given a refresher course on how to perform
Tamil prayers, and their names and phone numbers would be published at temples
to assist devotees who desire to use the option.
Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments PK Sekar Babu remarked
at the launch in Chennai's Kapaleeshwarar Temple, "This concept was conceived in
1974, and it has previously been implemented in the state. As directed by Chief
Minister MK Stalin, we have now done this. This will meet the needs of all areas
and will not cause any issues."
The option of
praying in Sanskrit will remain available.
Sowmya Shankar, a social worker from Chennai who attends the Mylapore temple,
said she would
choose this choice.
"It will be more meaningful if we understand the priest's prayers. Not everyone
would be
able to understand or relate to Sanskrit chanting "she stated
Geetha Muhilan, a businesswoman, stated, "It's a matter of faith, and the language
doesn't
really matter. This adds no worth to my life."
After training priests, the Tamil Nadu government aims to spread the Tamil
language option to all temples in the state. The DMK has opposed the imposition of
Hindi and Sanskrit in the state from a political standpoint. The party's anti-Hindi
campaign propelled it to power in the 1960s.
